Why You Should Choose Fujifilm Cameras Over Others

For a long time, I’d rely on my iPhone and the various phone lens accessories to take my travel pics. However, Fujifilm cameras have completely changed my photography game.

It has upgraded my travel photography like Beyonce upgraded Jay-Z. Yes, I think Fuji is the Beyonce of the camera world.

First established in 1934, Fuji is one of the iconic photography giants of history, surviving the escalation of technology when Kodak died. Since then, Fuji has continued to evolve with the times and produce stellar photography equipment.

And this camera brand, loved by hipsters and elder millennials alike, shows no sign of slowing.

Pros of Choosing a Fujifilm Travel Camera

Fuji 23mm vs 35mm samples

As you would imagine with their history, Fuji cameras are quite stylish and retro in their design and controls. Which is something that really drew me to the X-series body. These X-mount cameras are stylish, sleek and jammed pack with the latest imaging tech.

These mechanisms make operating the camera equipment quite instinctive. Something I think that has really improved my photography.

The dials are very tactile, something that I really love about my Fuji travel cameras. Fujifilm is known to be one of the best brands around for mirrorless cameras, and it’s easy to see why.

The wide range of Fuji interchangeable lenses on offer has earned them an excellent reputation in the photography world. It’s also persuading many budding photographers, pros and travel photographers (like myself) who are on the fence about which body to invest in.

This was one of the main factors in why I chose Fuji over Sony and Canon. The interchangeable lens meant that I could add more professional lenses to my personal line up as my photography improved.

Plus, I wanted to explore a different focal length without breaking the bank or having to buy a lens adaptor. Which is something I would have to do with other camera brands.

I brought the Fuji X-T2 with the kit lens, as at the time this is what I could afford. I never regretted this decision for a second. This is something that I recommend to most beginners looking for a great camera with top-rated specs, and that gives you professional-level quality images on a budget.

I also found that the Fuji lens are compact and light-weight, meaning that I can be out all day wondering a new city or a 5 hours photography walk and not be bogged down by my heavy camera gear.

The firmware updates, the versatility of the X-system (I’ll get to that in a bit) and overall quality of the cameras have earned Fuji a very positive reputation for creating little beasts of cameras.

As a bonus, they have a very unique aesthetic that beautifully combines vintage retro with cutting edge progression. How arty!

Cons of Choosing Fujifilm

Perhaps the only real disadvantage of the Fujifilm digital camera is that it is not quite as compact as some of its competitors. However, this difference in size is often not worth considering as a deciding factor.

Some photographers have also remarked on the battery life. However, this is largely a trait of all mirrorless cameras as opposed to Fujifilm cameras specifically.

Fujifilm has listened to its customers complaints and has upgraded the battery in the X-T4 to be bigger with a longer battery life. They also gave us the coveted full articulating screen.

How To Pick The Best Fuji Camera For You

If the sleek retro design and pin-sharp image quality of a Fuji camera has caught your eyes, then get ready to dive deeper and find out what Fuji camera to buy. After all, a great camera is an investment, and you want it to work for you for many years.

Understand the Fujifilm X Series Camera System

Fujifilm is known for its X-Series camera system. The X-series is a high-end digital camera range aimed at professional, enthusiastic photographers and beginners alike. Any of the cameras from this range promises to be one of the best cameras for travel.

Overall, you’ll find the following original versions and their upgraded generations.

  • X-T Series
  • X-H Series
  • X-Pro Series

The X-T gets its name from the unique X-Trans sensor technology which aims to increase resolution by eliminating the need for a low pass filter.

The X-H series, although not as popular as the other ranges in the series, is a top choice for travellers who enjoy shooting in low light and recording videos. This is largely due to the in-body image stabilisation, which helps to generate a smooth shot.

The X-Pro series is a popular choice for professional photographers who are focused on the finer details of photography.

Fujifilm X-T4 Review

I recently upgraded from my Fuji X-T2 to the new Fujifilm X-T4 and I have to say that this camera is an absolute beauty and a dream to use.

Fujifilm X T4 for travel

I think is a camera was made with hybrid shooters in mind, and this is why I love as I get more into video production. This will be the only camera that I need to capture both stills and video.

  • 4K Video: Yes
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Weather-sealing: Yes
  • Megapixel: 26.1
  • APS-C X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor
  • ISO 160-12800 (ISO 80-51200 extended)
  • 15fps continuous shooting (mechanical shutter)
  • 5-axis in-body image stabilisation
  • 3 inch, 1.62m-dot vari-angle fully articulated touchscreen
  • In-camera charging via USB-C
  • Full HD high-speed video at 240P

Pros:

Like its predecessor, the Fujifilm X-T4 is weather-proof and shoots excellent imagery, but it’s the only X-T Series body with the IBIS system, fully articulated touchscreen and a bigger battery for longer battery life. Full HD high-speed video at 240P which produces an up to 10x slow-motion effect.

A complete redesign of the autofocus system has resulted in much faster and quieter performance than previous models.

But my favourite feature and one of the main things that made me get this camera was the ѕtіllѕ-tо-mоvіе dіаl оn thе tор оf thе саmеrа.

This аllоwѕ уоu tо quісklу сhаngе ѕеttіngѕ. It also makes it possible for

This is a game-changer if you are a solo traveller or a one-man band, that shoots on the go.

Cons:

I haven’t found any yet.

Fujifilm X-T3

This beautiful camera is the best camera for all-around pros. Travel photography is a lot easier when you’ve got such an excellent camera as your tool.

Fujifilm X T3 travel camera
  • Size: 1323 x 93 x 59 mm (5.2 x 3.6 x 2.3 in.)
  • Megapixels: 26.1
  • Weight: 539g (including battery and SD memory card)
  • 4K Video: Yes
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Kit lens: 3.06 x zoom, 18-55mm, (27-84mm eq.)
  • Weather-sealing: Yes
  • Looks/Aesthetic: Nearly identical to the X-T2 (retro, black and silver)

Pros:

Like its predecessor, the Fujifilm X-T3 is weather-proof and shoots excellent imagery, but offers the added perk of improved low-light capabilities.

With up to 30 frames per second (fps), continuous shooting, and a highly responsive electronic viewfinder (EVF), you’ll be able to snap the perfect travel moment no matter how fast it flies by (which it normally does when you’re on the move).

Cons:

Unfortunately, the Fujifilm X-T3 lacks IBIS and starts to become a bit noisy when shooting after ISO 6400. You should also note that the shallow grip is not ideal if you have larger hands.

Fujifilm X-T2 Review

The Fujifilm X-T2 is best if you want a more affordable version of the X-T3. It prides itself in offering maximum control with minimal effort.

Fujifilm X T2 CAMERA TRAVEL
  • Size: 133 x 92 x 49 mm (5.2 x 3.6 x 1.9 in.)
  • Megapixels: 24.3
  • Weight: 507g (including battery and memory card)
  • 4K Video: Yes
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi only
  • Kit lens: 3.06 x zoom, 18-55mm, (27-84mm eq.)
  • Weather-sealing: Yes
  • Looks/Aesthetic: Retro, analogue-type black body with the opportunity to purchase with a silver top

Pros:

There are several pros of the Fujifilm X-T2. In addition to their excellent design, fantastic image quality and improved autofocus, the camera also shoots advanced 4K video.

What also makes this such a great Fuji travel camera is the ability to pull out the LCD screen. Tilting it allows you to be discrete and take shots without people around you catching on. This is overall an excellently easy camera to use, and is well suited to beginners and pros alike.

Cons:

On the downside, the camera lacks in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) and the autofocus is slightly slower (although it is improved from other ranges).

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Review

If you’re looking for a small camera for travel that works well for street photography, then this is it. The unique rangefinder makes this camera one of a kind and an excellent performer for capturing stills – especially for the professional.

FujifilmX Pro3
  • Size: 141 x 83 x 46 mm (5.5 x 3.3 x 1.8 in.)

Pros:

The improved hybrid viewfinder offers the benefits of both optical and electric, meaning that the camera offers versatility with simplicity. It also boasts a “hidden” LCD screen which allows you, as the photographer, to preview your images on the screen if you fold it out.

Cons:

With these developments come at a slightly higher price. As a result, the Fujifilm X-Pro is slightly more expensive than other cameras in the range.

Fujifilm X30 Review

The Fujifilm X30 is a “pocket-shooter” that allows travellers to take opportunistic photographs on the fly. With an excellent EVF and great control layout, you can grab the nifty camera out of your travel bag and snap away without too much fiddling.

FUJIFILM X30 REVIEW
  • Size: 119 x 72 x 60 mm (4.69 x 2.83 x 2.36 in.)
  • Megapixels: 12
  • Weight: 423g (including battery and memory card)
  • 4K Video: Yes
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi only
  • Camera lens: 4.00x zoom, (28-112mm eq.)
  • Weather-sealing: No
  • Looks/Aesthetic: Slick and compact black body with large LCD screen (available in black and silver)

Pros:

In addition to the Fujifilm X30’s great EVF and dynamic control layout, the camera also boasts internal WiFi and a tilting rear display to help with capturing the image and then sharing the result. The camera is also loved for its classic chrome film simulation.

Cons:

On the downside, the Fujifilm X30 doesn’t offer 4K or Bluetooth which limits the camera’s capabilities in video and connectivity. First manufactured in 2014, the 12-megapixel 2/3-inch is slightly outdated, and photographers can expect the occasional lens flare.

Fujifilm X-E3 Review

The streets of a city can tell incredible stories of the history that have passed between its walls, and the current moments that are contributing to history. What better way to experience these instances than by snapping them on your camera. And that’s where the Fujifilm X-E3 comes in as the perfect camera for street photography.

Fujifilm X E3 Review
  • Size: 121 x 74 x 43 mm (4.8 x 2.9 x 1.7 in.)
  • Megapixels: 24.3
  • Weight: 337g (including battery and memory card)
  • 4K Video: Yes
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Kit lens: 3.06 x zoom, 18-55mm, (27-84mm eq.)
  • Weather-sealing: No
  • Looks/Aesthetic: Black, stylish and compact body in the iconic Fuji-retro design

Pros:

Fujifilm’s X-E series is the affordable alternative to the X-Pro range without compromising on a wonderful design and fantastic image quality.

The camera offers great value for money, shoots in 4K and has a strong lens ecosystem. It’s the perfect piece of equipment for capturing every corner of the next city that you visit. And if you want to take it to the next level, check out the best Fuji lenses for street photography.

Cons:

While the Fujifilm X-E3 is more affordable, it does come at the cost of no internal stabilisation. The viewfinder is limited as it is only electronic (this can be a disappointment for photographers who prefer the optical viewfinder).

Fujifilm X-A7

What’s better than capturing a single still moment when travelling the world? Some would argue being able to record a series of moments on video. The Fujifilm X-A7 is a fantastic choice for travel video – and not just because of its flip-out screen.

Fujifilm X A7 for travel
  • Size: 119 x 68 x 41 mm (4.7 x 2.7 x 1.6 in.)
  • Megapixels: 24.2
  • Weight: 320g (including battery and memory card)
  • 4K Video: Yes
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Kit lens: 3.00 x zoom, 15-45mm, (22.5-67.5mm eq.)
  • Weather-sealing: No
  • Looks/Aesthetic: Same retro Fuji style but made from polycarbonate, and not metal, available in trendy silver/black, camel brown/silver, mint green/silver, and dark silver/black

Pros:

Between its full 4K video capabilities and great LCD screen, the Fujifilm X-A7 is a top choice for travellers who love to vlog.

The mirrorless model has a flip-out screen which makes it a lot easier to see what is being recorded while on the road. As a bonus, it’s lighter than other Fuji models and comes in a variety of quirky and expressive colours.

Cons:

The Fujifilm X-A7 doesn’t have an eye-level viewfinder which can make it a little bit awkward to use at times. Another aspect to be aware of is that the kit lens is rather limited and not the most impressive in the Fuji range.

Fujifilm X-T100 (include the X-T30 and X-T200) | Best Fujifilm Camera for Beginners

FUJIFILM X T100 FOR TRAVEL

Overall, the Fujifilm X-T100 is the best camera for travel photography, especially for beginners. It strikes the perfect balance between entry-level and high end.

  • Size: 121 x 83 x 47 mm (4.8 x 3.3 x 1.9 in.)
  • Megapixels: 24.2
  • Weight: 448g (including battery and memory card)
  • 4K Video: Yes, but limited to 15 fps
  • WiFi/Bluetooth: WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
  • Kit lens: 3.00 x zoom, 15-45mm, (22.5-67.5mm eq.)
  • Weather-sealing: No
  • Looks/Aesthetic: Classic Fuji-style camera with the option of black or black and silver

Pros:

The Fujifilm X-T100 range is pocketable and lightweight, making it easy to capture fleeting moments as you travel around the world. The simple menu, ease of use and affordability make it the perfect camera for the entry-level photographers.

Cons:

While the Fujifilm X-T100 can shoot in 4K, it can only do so at 15 fps. It also has a slower autofocus, and the ISO range is limited for RAW shooting.

How To Choose The Best Travel Camera

There are a few key aspects to consider when making this purchase. Whether you’re an amateur photographer looking for the perfect camera for beginners, or you’ve got a few photographic artworks under your belt.

When travelling with a camera, you want it to be as compact, high quality and lightweight as possible. So here are a few questions to ask when buying one:

  • Is the camera mirrorless?
  • Is the camera a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR)?
  • How compact is the camera?
  • How versatile is the camera?
  • How easily does the camera connect to share?
  • What is the quality of the photographs?

While all of these features are important, I’d like to expand on the first three.

Why Choose A Mirrorless Camera?

A mirrorless camera still allows you to use different lenses on the body, but it does not require a mirror to reflect the image into the electronic viewfinder. As a result, the camera is a lot more compact and portable, making it easy to fit in your luggage.

Another major plus of the mirrorless camera is that you can preview your images on-screen. They are also generally better suited for video, so they are the perfect choice for any aspiring travel vloggers.

BROADWAY TOWER

What Is a DSLR?

In a very simplified way, a DSLR camera differs from a mirrorless camera because it uses a light prism inside the body to reflect the image into your viewfinder to preview your shot. As a result, DSLR cameras are slightly larger.

However, with this extra size come some benefits. For example, DSLR cameras are known to be superior with auto-focus, better preview in low-light, more varied lens compatibility and even better battery life.

Benefits Of A Compact Camera

With improved technology, both types of cameras are as compact as they’ve ever been, and you’ll benefit from whichever camera that you choose.

When deciding on the best compact camera for travel, it’s important to assess what your needs are. If you plan on filming video footage, or want to point and shoot, then you may want to opt for mirrorless.

Alternatively, if you want to travel with a variety of lenses and dive deep into various photography skills, then a DSLR may be the best choice for you.

Regardless of which compact camera you choose, I’d highly recommend making it a Fujifilm.

Best Fuji X-Series Lens

In the above reviews, I’ve mentioned the Fujifilm X-Mount, which is a type of interchangeable lens mount that is used for the cameras in the Fuji X-Series.

Palma Old Town Spain

There are several lenses that fit these mounts, providing versatility to both budding and professional photographers alike.

Key Considerations

An important aspect to consider when choosing your lens is whether or not the lens supports optical image stabilisation (O.I.S). This mode can be switched on or off in the camera menu, allowing the camera lens to move and compensate for any unwanted camera movement.

When it comes to F-stop, the lower the number, the more light is let in. The Fujifilm lens kit offers lenses that stop down to f/2.8.

As a bonus, these lenses are weather-resistant, meaning that you can pull out your camera and snap the spontaneous moment without too much concern.

Fujifilm18-55mm f/2.8

While there are many Fujifilm lenses to choose from, the best lens for travel photography is arguably the kit lens 18-55mm f/2.8. This lens offers a broad focal length range and is described as a cornerstone product that deserves repeated praise.

Although slightly more expensive than other entry-level kit lenses, the Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8 offers incredible value for money. The kit lens can be used for both the Fuji X-T3 and the Fuji X-T100.

Images captured with this kit lens are exceptionally sharp and show impressive detail.

FAQs About the Best Fuji Camera

Fujifilm has been around for several decades and has earned a brilliant reputation in the photography world.

However, the chances are that you’ll still have a few questions about the brand. Hopefully, I can answer a couple of them here.

Where Are Fuji Cameras Made?

Fujifilm started off as a Japanese brand in 1934, and the incredible products are still being produced in their homeland.

The cameras and lenses are made in the Fujifilm and Fujinon factory in Sendai, Japan. The products are then shipped around the world and bought as the best cameras for travelling.

What Fujifilm Accessories Should I Buy?

The body is the most important part of the camera. Without it, you can’t capture a single moment. However, without certain accessories, the body of the camera is useless.

I’ve already touched on the various Fuji lenses available, but you’ll still need to buy other necessities, such as batteries. As well as nice-to-haves such as ND filters and screen protectors.

Fujifilm Batteries

Fujifilm batteries are known to have a shorter life span than others. For this reason, I’d recommend rechargeable batteries that allow you to save money in the long run.

The best choice is the Fujifilm Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery NP-W126S for older X-series model and for the NP-W235 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery for the new X-T4.

ND Filter

A neutral-density (ND) filter is a really great accessory to have as it allows you to easily control the exposure of a photograph. This is a very useful accessory to have if you’re interested in long exposure photography while on the road.

To find your thread filter size, look under the lens cover which will have the diameter size for that lens.

Screen Protector

Even the most graceful photographer has a horror story about scratching or dropping their camera. A Fujifilm screen protector is a simple accessory that can prevent a complicated problem. Now, you can travel with your camera, knowing that its screen is protected.

Alternative Travel Cameras (Other Than Fujifilm)

If you’re on the fence, asking yourself “Should I buy Fujifilm XT100 or Sony A6300 for travel and street photography?” then I’d say you should test them both out and see which feels better. That is, if you have the budget for it.

Although this article aims to help you choose the top Fujifilm travel camera, there are other brands that do a great job at capturing your special moments.

Two of the best Sony travel cameras are the Sony A7RIII which has the latest Sony autofocus system and the Sony A6400, which has a fantastic LCD screen.

Any travel camera that is compact, offers optimal image stabilisation and can capture an awesome image without too much fiddling is a great win.

Final Thoughts | The Best All-Round Fujifilm For Travel

While the best Fujifilm for travel photography will depend largely on what you hope to achieve on your trip, I highly recommend the Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm X-T2, Fujifilm X-T3 and the Fujifilm X-30.

These versatile cameras will not only allow you to visually cherish your memories forever, but will also spark wanderlust when you share them with other people.

Fujifilm has helped photographers store their travel memories for decades, and are sure to have the perfect camera for you.
